Musical Director

Michael Cooper has been Musical Director of Pocklington Singers since 1993, having been a member of the choir since 1988 as a tenor and accompanist.  He was brought up in Leeds and studied Mathematics at University College, Oxford, where his musical interests gradually gained ascendancy. He served as College Organist for two years after graduating, whilst employed in the town.

Michael and his wife moved to Pocklington by chance in 1988 and have remained there ever since.  He  is organist at All Saints’ Church and teaches piano, organ, clarinet, flute and trumpet, and coaches students in Maths GCSE and A-level.  As well as leading the Pocklington Singers, he sings in Good Company, a small choir, which concentrates on 16th and 17th century repertoire.  He is in demand as a piano accompanist for concerts and exams, and he has assisted various schools with their concerts, plays and carol services.

Michael’s good-humoured and quietly optimistic approach ensures that rehearsals are always enjoyable, and he has helped the Pocklington Singers to produce a succession of excellent concerts over the years.
